GO FOR ETHICAL FASHION
JOIN THE “GO FOR ETHICAL FASHION” CHALLENGE AND BE PART OF THE SOLUTION:
The fashion industry is one of the world’s most polluting. More than ever, our clothes are made of plastic in non-ethical conditions. Just washing these items can pollute the oceans. Avoid fast fashion and choose well-selected long-lived natural fabrics.
It will save the environment, as sustainable fashion entails making things out of local, biodegradable fabric that can eventually return to the ecosystem after you have worn it out.
HOW TO SUCCEED IN THIS CHALLENGE
1. Choose the good fabric
Avoid fabrics made using petroleum and chemicals like polyester, nylon, acrylic, and other synthetic fibers.
Here are the best options: organic cotton, bamboo linen, hemp, linen, silk, and wool. Lyocell, made from natural cellulose found in wood pulp (harvested from sustainably farmed forest plantations), also rates fairly well.
2. Track your purchases
Get rid of the clothes you don’t wear, shop less, and avoid going to sales. When you plan to buy something, always ask yourself if you really need it and how many times you’re going to wear it.3. Choose products that have less packaging, and safer packaging (glass over plastic).
3. Repair your clothes
Buy second-hand clothes made of natural fibers.
4. Buy clothes made locally with ethical labels
Buy good quality and avoid all types of synthetic fibers (synthetic microfibers pollute water each time you wash them). Those ethical labels will also guarantee ethical and fair practices towards employees. By choosing sustainable fashion brands, you choose fair wages and better working conditions for the people making your clothes.
