REDUCE ENERGY WASTE
JOIN THE “REDUCE ENERGY WASTE” CHALLENGE AND BE PART OF THE SOLUTION:
Electricity accounts for about 40% of all energy consumed in the United States (source EPA reports). Taking a few simple steps to reduce your own energy consumption can have a huge, long-term impact on saving biodiversity, and it can save you money.
This challenge is all about making your home more sustainable, and it’s done mostly through small changes that take little time or effort.
HOW TO SUCCEED IN THIS CHALLENGE
Reduce energy waste = saving your money also – it’s a win-win!
1. Easy ways to reduce your consumption at home
-Power down your computer
-Use energy-efficient LED bulbs instead of incandescent bulbs
-Eliminate vampire/standby power: unplug chargers
-Use a power strip
-Turn off your lights when not in use
-Turn off the TV and other appliances when you are not using them
-Heat and cool naturally: turn off your heating / cooling when you’re not at home, use your windows, curtains, blinds or fans to regulate the temperature
2. Technology
-Manage your subscriptions
If you are subscribed to newsletters, reassess which ones you really need/enjoy reading. It might be time to unsubscribe from those you never read.
-Control your activity and clean unnecessary private data from servers – link to clean your activity on google
You can do the same for Amazon and many other accounts that keep your data.
-Disconnect from screens, limit social media, and avoid notifications. All the time you spend on social media uses a lot of electricity and tends to disconnect you from yourself, from others, and from nature. Limit social media usage
3. Major changes at home
-Get your home better insulated, for example upgrade your windows
-Choose a renewable energy supplier, if possible
-Install alternative energy, such as solar electric systems or solar water heaters
